cognos planning

Cognos Planning was a market leading product for budgeting, reporting and forecasting for many years but is now in its end-of-life phase.

Although it will continue to be supported for some time yet, there will be few if any enhancements and no guarantee of errors being fixed, with an increasing risk of it not being compatible with a client’s infrastructure updates.

IBM's flagship performance management tool is now Planning Analytics: Powered by TM1.

Legacy Cognos Planning customers are urged to start planning their migration, especially if any of the following apply:

  • You are experiencing performance problems with Cognos Planning
  • You are planning significant changes to the application
  • Your Cognos Planning system cannot cope with extra levels of detail and greater data volumes that you wish to incorporate
  • Administration times for Cognos Planning (GTP, synchronisation, publishing) are unacceptably long and cause operational delays

Migration to Planning Analytics: Powered by TM1

TM1 and Cognos Planning have very different architectures and migration needs careful consideration.  It is also a good opportunity to review your planning requirements thoroughly, to ensure that the new application meets your evolving needs.

It is critical to engage a partner with solid TM1 expertise.  Simply replicating your Cognos Planning application in TM1 is unlikely to give good results, you need a partner who really knows what they are doing.

Customers who have already migrated to the TM1 platform report many benefits:

  • Greater scalability allows users to budget and report at a more detailed level and over far longer time periods
  • Accelerated timescales for preparing, approving and publishing budgets and forecasts due to the real-time nature of TM1
  • Faster reporting, as there is no need for the batch publishing runs used in Cognos Planning
  • Easier scenario modelling and versioning simplifying comparison and analysis
  • Reduced support costs, through the absence of lengthy administrative processes
  • Lower hardware and infrastructure costs due to the simpler architecture

In summary, why are businesses migrating to TM1? Quite simply because Cognos Planning cannot meet their needs in today's world - and TM1 can.
